It was a time when Seattle was having the first home craze and bidding wars were becoming the norm. We were looking for anything at that moment - rent or buy (whichever was cheaper). We saw many condos and townhomes that shocked us with its price compared to size. Little did we know that this brightly lit townhouse was waiting to be ours.
CLICK FOR MORE>>
......................................................................................................................
Kahkasan Akhihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11518032173714503282noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5373888556892624465.post-60898767291362746232021-06-24T18:42:00.002-05:002021-06-24T19:26:08.099-05:00Food: Whole Fish Fried and Steamed

Honestly I cannot figure out what to name this fish preparation. So this onion sauce will need be extra salty, extra tangy, and extra hot!

Now add the rice vinegar…we are almost done! To aid in that, we often shop for groceries that come directly from home, such as the fish. I also find myself much like the others in front of that fish freezer in the ethnic grocery shops. But I also more importantly love to shop for local fish and try and find similarities between them and my homeland’s. In that effort of doing so I have compiled a list of fish as you can see here. I hope this helps you as much as it helps me in my fish shopping adventures in America.

......................................................................................................................
Kahkasan Akhihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11518032173714503282noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5373888556892624465.post-31716842128334211662021-06-23T18:26:00.001-05:002021-06-23T18:26:06.678-05:00Art: Black and White Ink Art

This series of paintings started with purchasing a gorgeous stack of cardstock sketch paper. Maybe this is how I relive my rickshaw riding memories of Bangladesh. It’s such a freeing feeling as the rickshaw pulls along the pitched roads, amidst tall buildings as the wind blows strands of your hair. All you readers who have experienced this - I have taken you down the memory lane haven’t I? As soon as I started this painting my very dear friends bought it even before I could finish. The view is from the back of the rickshaw which happens to be the most colorful part of the Bangladeshi cycle rickshaw. Towards the bottom, between the two rubber wheels is this rectangular piece of tin which displays hand painted movie posters, as I have done in the painting. Other times there are beautiful landscapes, buildings or other cultural icons. The rickshaws are all handmade and almost all of them come in such bright vibrant colors till weather takes a toll on them. I received so much love and support on this painting which I did not anticipate. It is currently residing with its owner in Dallas who happens to be a dear friend.

16"x20" Acrylic on Canvas

2020

......................................................................................................................
Kahkasan Akhihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11518032173714503282noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5373888556892624465.post-87857337169781163182021-02-25T00:38:00.003-06:002021-02-25T00:46:58.074-06:00Art: Bangla Coloring Book

It was a nice and sunny fall day last year. I am indebted to my friend Naoshin for introducing me to the big tray full of fish heads in the Asian market's seafood section. These heads are the byproduct of the steaks they sell. Hence the heads are sold at a fraction of the price of the steaks. She also taught me to get the fish heads cut into small pieces right then and there.

I have absolutely zero credit in this gorgeous decor and delish food that you are about to experience through these photos. These are pictures from my pregnancy celebration arranged by my loving family and friends in my second home - Dallas. The decor was almost entirely put together by my very talented nieces, and the food was made lovingly by my sisters and cousins. They picked green, gold and white as the main colors and intertwined greenery and nature with it. I was totally taken aback when I saw the entire set up and I keep going back to admire each and everything in these pictures.

Unique in the object itself and also unique in the sense that what I find unique could be totally different than what others see in it. You never really walk into a thrift-store looking for something in particular. You walk into a thrift shop to find out which treasure finds you. And so I pick out and buy any such treasure that jumps at me. Most of the times these are things that I do not need. Marie Kondo would shudder at the thought of this!

During one such trip, I had bought a few wooden frames. This was about six months ago and I have been slowly painting this one. Now it is finally done and ready to go on my Etsy Shop.

I wanted an open wall shelf overhead of the window seat, so that it can serve as a reading nook. I found an industrial style three-tiered shelf at Kirkland's online store that I liked for the price. I hung it high enough so that someone can easily slide into the window seat without knocking their head on the shelf. But once I hung it, I realized that only the underside of the shelves were in view. And this underside is black and sort of boring to look at. So then I decided to do some doodle on the back of these shelves as you can see in the image....

It is a corner unit with glazing on all three sides. After we moved in, I took my time in researching and deciding how to treat all these windows. I absolutely love curtains, but I wanted to mix it up between curtains and shades. Once I had done my research, I realized that this was becoming a very expensive project given the amount of windows that needed covering. I looked into every possible window treatment there is, and then finally found what I was looking for and for an unbeatable price!

CLICK FOR MORE>>
......................................................................................................................
Kahkasan Akhihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11518032173714503282noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5373888556892624465.post-5693592093018171902018-02-02T14:34:00.001-06:002018-07-25T12:21:02.888-05:00dwell: neutral over neutral [dining space]

Accent walls can be really effective in enhancing the feel of a space. But people often make the mistake in thinking that any wall can become an accent wall, and then they automatically go with a bold color. This dining room wall was a very overwhelming red....and the eye would naturally be drawn to the wall and everything else in the room became instantly insignificant. Since it is the longest wall of this room, it also made the room feel smaller.

The room felt instantly calm once I painted the primer to cover the deep red. I am a big fan of layering neutrals over neutrals in terms of furniture as well as for outfits. And I had the chance to do it in this room. Our small dining set of four was already in a neutral base. To compliment that, we started looking for a hutch to fit all of our china, since the kitchen barely fits our cooking utensils and pantry. I knew that if the hutch was wood or any other darker hue it would overpower over everything else because of its size. I needed the hutch to blend in like a built-in would and serve its main function of providing storage. We had no plans to purchase it from IKEA but they had this in display - two next to each other. And it seemed the perfect piece and so we also have two side by side making it look like a larger piece. It was a pain in the butt to put both of them together and I made mistakes along the way, but in the end it fits in the space perfectly. I am also enjoying rearranging objects and crockeries on its open shelves.
I had already decided that the round rattan mirror will go on this wall against the dining. And once I placed it, I started looking to see what other round wall decor I had. The only thing new on this wall is the colorful round basket at the bottom which I bought from a thrift store here in Seattle called the Value Village.

The most important thing left to do is for us to find a light fixture for this room to replace the boring existing one. This space will feel incomplete till we do so. Till then, enjoy this post!

A "bhaji" is a Bengali word meaning "fry" or "stir-fry". In this case its a simple stir-fry consisting of just one vegetable. A "bhaji" can be eaten with rice or bread[roti/paratha]. And if you are trying to forgo the carbs then just by itself. These "bhaji"s have a very simple recipe. But what is time consuming is the slicing of the vegetables - taking a large vegetable and then peeling and breaking it down to smaller pieces, and then chopping them up into juliennes.
